star light, star bright - 2000-09-27
When you're up, you're up. When you're down, you're down. And when you're only halfway up, you're neither up nor down.
That's pretty stupid, eh?
I forgot to mention here, that last week, for the first time in about ten years I saw a shooting star in the Elmira area. It is quite remarkable, usually there are few stars even visible.
The first one I ever saw in my entire life was on a cold winter night when I was ten, or so. I was walking my beloved dog around the block after dinner. It was a freezing night, and he and I both could not tolerate the weather.
He stopped to sniff, though, still. Unlike most dog owners, I would let him sniff with reckless abandon, provided it was not feces he was sniffing, and I do this because I know sniffing gives dogs the most pleasure out of any of their senses, and he got sick of, I'm sure, the smells around the house and yard.
When he sniffed, he took his time... My eyes would wander, looking for something as sensual as whatever he was sniffing, and this time I looked to the sky, and saw a flaming streak. At the time I thought it was a UFO, and ran quite fast back home, interrupting my poor dog's smelling.
It was beautiful though, I was terrified because it was something unknown to me, and those are the scariest things. I had heard of shooting stars before, but I figured it was more of an Arctic thing... Not an Elmira thing. Not until I became stargazer, did I see any others...
Last week, driving home from coffee with Chad, I saw another. I did not tell him... It really floored me, and for the first time I made a wish.
Of course, I can't tell you what that wish is, but it seems to be falling into place slowly as everyday passes.
I don't know how I could ever understand it, but for some reason, I think everything is reflected in the stars. There is an answer to everything up there, somewhere. The past, the future, everything.
It really helps me get by, in case you haven't noticed.
