I'm reminded of the story of Craddoc from the Chronicles of Prydain, a series of fantay novels I read as a child that essentially shaped my imagination for years to come.
Craddoc was an old shepherd, who kept to himself and his flock in an isolated valley, far, far away from any sort of civilization. Now, his sheep were his life. He kept them, but did not gain any sort of living from them, in fact he had no living at all.
He really had no life outside of his valley, his flock...
Taran came to find him, on the quest for his parentage, and Craddoc lied to Taran, and told him he was his father. Taran stayed with his "father" until the old shepherd died, having fallen down a ditch, trying to rescue one of his stranded sheep.
He knew no one but his sheep... He wanted company. Taran being a victim of his loneliness...
He spent nights gazing at the stars in his valley, his own little slant of earth. He was lonely, but he was proud.
I feel very alone, and when I feel alone, I am by myself, with my thoughts, the voices in my head. The voices beat the hell out of me, and tell me how awful I am, and if I was alone like Craddoc, I think they would drive me into the grave.
But maybe that's what I need? Time alone, to fight some sort of inner civil war. But when you're in love, you don't really want to be alone from your lover...

I am reminded of the space scene from Final Fantasy 8. Rinoa is floating through space (in a spacesuit, of course...), and she has passed out inside. She will likely float away from the spaceship, and she will die.
Squall goes into space and has to maneuver himself to catch her. Up until this moment he knows nothing of emotion, he is pretty much dead to the world, just walking around but not FEELING around.
Squall meets her in outer space, and grabs onto her, and never lets her go after that.
It's really funny how love can flourish in almost any circumstance, even in outer space, a place devoid of everything, hence the name "space".
It's really funny how love can flourish THROUGH any circumstance, too...
